TUNNEL BORING MACHINE

Why Tunnel Boring Machine?

The current state of tunneling technology makes widespread adoption of Hyperloop technology unviable. The Not-A-Boring competition is fueling advancements towards a sustainable transit by challenging teams to build a Tunnel Boring Machine capable of digging 1.5 meters into the ground, boring 30 meter tunnel, and it must do this faster than a snail moving the same distance.

A Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) is a robust piece of equipment utilized in construction to carve out tunnels of circular cross-sections through various substrates like rock, soil, and occasionally ice.

The Tunnel Boring Machine can...

SOLVE TRAFFIC

Roads occupy valuable space in cities where land availability is scarce. By building tunnels, we can minimize usage of surface area and could move entire transportation networks underground.

PRESERVE URBAN LANDSCAPES

To solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic, roads must go 3D. Tunneling networks are 3D and provide high-throughput transportation in an economically viable way.

ENABLE HYPERLOOP

Hyperloop networks unlock high-speed regional transportation surpassing other alternatives. Hyperloop enables access to individualized, point to point high-speed transportation.

Subteams Structure

A cylindrical steel shell that encases the cutterhead and the main body of the TBM. It prevents the tunnel from collapsing during excavation.

Houses the operation team that monitors and controls the TBM's functions using a series of sensors, cameras, and monitoring systems.

The cutterhead is the rotating front part of the TBM that excavates the ground. Excavated material (muck) is transported through openings in the cutterhead for removal.
